A Brief Note on JNC

Kalahandi is located in the Western part of Odisha & the population of the district is 15, 76,869 (2011 census) of which major part resort to wage earning for their daily bread. More than 92.6% population lives in the rural area. The district is coming under KBK category of districts for its backwardness in all basic indicators. The prevalence of blindness in the Kalahandi district is 2% which is much higher than State (1.4%) and National (1.1%) prevalence rate respectively (District information source).Taking into consideration the then prevailing eye care scenario, especially of the huge cataract backlog and minimal cataract surgical rate of Kalahandi District, lack of proper eye care facilities and demand of the population, LEPRA Society started its eye care intervention in Kalahandi district through establishment of an advanced and well equipped secondary level eye hospital named as Junagarh Netra Chikitschalaya(JNC)-LEPRA Society in 2016 at Junagarh in a PPP mode. As per signed MOU, the building & infrastructure was constructed by WODC, Equipment and some part of HR was supported by Sightsaver and LEPRA was chosen as the implementing partner under this tripartite agreement.
Taking a mission LEPRA society Started Junagarh Netra Chikitsalaya in 2016 for eradicating the avoidable blindness of people of western Orissa.Junagarh Netra Chikitsalaya started for following mission and Vision.

• To Provide quality eye care services to the people especially population of western Odisha through base hospital services and its extension activities.
• Service delivery through integrated vision centers to strengthen the eye health delivery system in remote areas.
• Further enhancement of the performance of the eye health workforce and the quality of eye health service delivery at the base hospital by providing training in identified areas.
• To increase the eye health awareness and uptake of eye health services by the people of the Operational area.
• To provide LOW Vision aid services to the needy People in Collaboration with Sight Savers, SSA and Other Partners.

Rural Eye Health Program

The Rural Eye Health project was started in 2016 in Kalahandi district. Which funded by Sightsavers India. Majority of the rural population is affected by Cataract, which continues to be the major cause of blindness followed by Refractive Error, Glaucoma, with growing burden of Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinopathy of Prematurity. Under this program two vision centers are running in Kalahandi district.

  • Cataract & Refractive Errors (including Low Vision)
  • Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy,
  • Childhood Eye Health (other than refractive errors) and Retinopathy of Prematurity

  • Eye Health Advocacy

School Eye health Program

School Eye health Program

School Eye Health Programme was started in Kalahandi district of Odisha in 2018 in collaboration with the district education and Health department. Programme covers children studying in schools in the age group of 5-15 years, who are especially vulnerable to low achievement and long-term consequences of un-attended eye disorders. The programme intends to reach all school going children in the district in active collaboration and support of the Govt. education and health departments. Goal of the programme is that the school going children receive quality eye health services as part of the wider school health programme. Besides providing eye care services to students, the programme also aims to develop master trainers & in turn train teachers on preliminary vision screening by using a simple but scientific eye screening kit. Apart from this, the programme also works on building eye health awareness in the school atmosphere through conducting regular eye health awareness sessions for the students, teachers, parents and the SMC (school management committee) members.

The Specific Goals of the Project are

  • To deliver Primary Eye Care Services to address problems like refractive error and low Vision among Children.
  • To ensure an increased uptake of eye health services among school students.
  • To ensure that affordable and quality eye health services exist in the school health system.

How to reach JNC

Junagarh is a Block HQ of Kalahandi District. It is 26 KM far from Bhawanipatna. One has to catch the Railway station road to come JNC.JNC is on the way of Kuruguda road,which is approximately 1.5 KM distance from Junagarh main road.
