Eye care services for people affected by leprosy remained as one of the priority areas of Lepra Society in preventing disabilities of leprosy-affected people related with ocular ailments. Blindness always remains as one of the major public health problem ofthe world especially in developing countries such as India. Considering the magnitude of the problem & existing infrastructure in its intervention districts then & there, LEPRAdreamt to provide quality eye care services in an affordable price to the poor & needy people of western Odisha. The dream materialized in 2003 through establishment of an eye hospital at Sonepurinitially on a small scale and later realizing the greater needs of the population, established a 30 bedded secondary level eye hospital at Birmaharajpur of Sonepur district in the year 2005 partnering with Sightsavers for the Common Mission of Combating avoidable Blindness which consists around 80% of total blindness.

The new hospital was named as MNC- Lepra Society in the name of river Mahanadi which flows at the vicinity and arguably is the lifeline of Odisha. With each passing days, the project has enhanced its reach and capacity in terms of infrastructure, skill & human resources to prove itself as the most preferred eye care institution of Western Odisha. As of now, the project is catering the eye care needs of entire Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh,Sambalpur & Kandhamal districts and parts of Bolangir & Angul districts.
