India has 20 perent of the world’s blind people – around 40 million people and 1.6 million children are either blind or visually impaired. Increased life expectancy has led to a sharp increase in the number of elderly persons.These people are prone to develop age related ocular morbidity problems like cataract, refractive error, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, low vision, ARMD etc.This indicates that the challenges of eliminating avoidable blindness in elderly persons are increasingly becoming tougher than before.
Blindness brings profound socio-economic disadvantages to individuals, their families and societies. Malnutrition affects 852 million people, leading to blindness, illness and death. (Source: VISION: 2020 document). Ocular morbidity hampers performance at school; reduces employability and productivity and, in general, impairs the quality of life, which has a direct impact on the economic health of the nation. VISION: 2020 recognises the poverty trap of people living with blindness, their likeliness of being excluded from basic health, education and social services and the consequent risks of isolation, ill health and economic exclusion. India has been committed to reduce this burden of blindness by adopting the strategies advocated for vision 2020-‘ THE RIGHT TO SIGHT”, which seeks to ensure the best possible vision for all people by adopting an integrated approach based on priority diseases in poverty stricken and underserved areas.
Eye care services for people affected by leprosy remained as one of the priority areas of LEPRA Society in preventing disabilities of leprosy-affected people related with ocular ailments. Blindness always remains as one of the major public health problem of the world especially in developing countries such as India.
