The initiation of eye care-services by LEPRA LEPRA’S eye care intervention started as one of the disability management components especially looking at the unwillingness of the Ophthalmologists and ophthalmic paramedics of general health care system to cater the eye care needs of leprosy-affected persons because of the stigma &involved close proximity to the patient preventing the leprosy affected persons the opportunities of early diagnosis and treatments resulting in severe eye problem consequences. Initially, though the services were intended for leprosy affected persons but to cater the huge need & demand of the population, gradually extended it for the general population collaborating with government & other likeminded agencies.

LEPRA (registered as Society) is recognised as an active partner in the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) and is also a member of VISION 2020 forum in India and committed to the prevention of blindness in Odisha, particularly in underserved districts mostly located in western parts of Odisha through its base hospital & extension services.
